Jacques de Matignon was the second son of Charles de Matignon (1564–1648) and Éléonore d'Orléans. He was raised as a child of honour to the young King Louis XIII.

In 1612, he was captain of 100 men-in-arms, lieutenant-general of the government of Normandy and governor of Cherbourg and Granville.

In 1625, he carried out the charge of a light cavalry parerter in the Italian army.

Jacques de Matignon died on 25 March 1626, aged twenty-seven, killed in a duel by François de Montmorency, Count of Boutteville.
